Brazilian Sugaring Wax

5 Things You Always Wanted To Ask About Sugaring Intimate Zones

Are you interested in getting a Brazilian hair removal treatment of intimate zones with the help of sugaring? Don’t know what to expect? Sugaring isn’t clearly understood by many, so I’d like to help explain it for you.  Some may be worried about the steps involved, or if the procedure is overly painful.

If this is your first time sugaring, the uncertainty of it makes it even worse. However, frustration and embarrassment can be avoided if you know exactly what to expect.

The answers to the questions below were based on the opinions of recognized beauty specialists, as well as qualified cosmetology instructors. Everything that you need to know about what should and shouldn’t be done when sugaring is in this article.

Basically, sugaring waxing, also known as simply sugaring, is a hair removal technique that involves using a sticky paste made from natural ingredients to remove unwanted body hair. It is an ancient method of hair removal that has been practiced for centuries in various cultures.

There are a few advantages to sugaring waxing. The sugar paste is made from natural ingredients, making it a popular choice for those with sensitive skin or allergies to waxing products. Additionally, sugaring is often considered less painful than traditional waxing, as the paste adheres to the hair rather than sticking to the skin, resulting in less irritation. Sugaring can also lead to smoother skin, as the paste can help exfoliate dead skin cells.

How to prep for a Brazilian sugar wax?

Exfoliate: To prepare for the procedure, it is necessary to carefully exfoliate the skin. This procedure helps to rid the skin of dead skin cells and thoroughly cleans the skin follicles.

Scrubbing is especially important if the hairs grow very densely. The procedure minimizes the risk of ingrown hair. Additionally, a hot bath contributes to a better softening of the skin.

Cleanse the area: On the day of your appointment, make sure the area to be waxed is clean and free of lotions, oils, or creams. If you are worried about getting to the salon after a long day you should keep in mind that upon arrival, most salons will offer women’s intimate wipes right in the office. If these are not provided, you can bring your own wet wipes with you in your purse just in case.

Hydrate and moisturize: Drink plenty of water in the days leading up to your appointment to keep your skin hydrated. Well-hydrated skin is more pliable and less prone to irritation. However, avoid applying moisturizers or oils to the area on the day of the waxing, as they can interfere with the sugar paste’s adherence.

Wear loose-fitting clothing: Opt for loose-fitting and breathable clothing on the day of your sugaring waxing session. Tight clothing can rub against the freshly waxed area and cause discomfort or irritation.

Can you get sugaring done while on period?

Sugaring intimate zones during menstruation is quite normal. The most important thing to remember if this is your case is to have open and free communication with your esthetician about the situation before they begin to apply the paste. If you are using a tampon the paste can be applied carefully so as not to grab on to the tampon string.

One thing to note of is that during menstrual cycles, sensitivity is increased in intimate areas as well as feelings of discomfort. The pain may be felt more sharply, so you should always ask yourself if you want to wait a week before getting the sugaring waxing done during your period.

How long should hair be for sugaring?

The ideal length for sugaring waxing is around 1/4 to 1/2 inch (6 to 12 mm).

Hair becomes this length approximately 14 days after shaving. If your hair is too short, the sugar paste may not be able to grab onto the hair effectively, and if it’s too long, it can make the process more painful.  Hair that is too long has a risk of breaking off, and later forming an ingrown hair.

Remember, you should never be embarrassed by your own “hairiness”, especially in front of the esthetician. It’s also important to note that the exact recommended hair length may vary depending on individual preferences and the specific area being waxed. Some estheticians may have slightly different guidelines, so it’s best to consult with a professional esthetician who can provide personalized advice based on your specific needs and the area you want to wax.

Does sugaring hurt?

Anyone who hopes for a magical, painless method of hair removal will immediately be disappointed. Sugaring is generally considered to be less painful compared to traditional waxing methods, however, sugaring can also have some discomfort.

There are a few reasons why sugaring is often perceived as less uncomfortable:

  1. Adhering to hair, not skin: The sugar paste used in sugaring waxing sticks primarily to the hair and not as much to the skin. When the paste is removed, it pulls the hair out from the root, resulting in less traction on the skin and a potentially more comfortable experience.
  2. Lower temperature: Sugaring paste is typically used at body temperature or slightly warmer, unlike traditional hot wax, which is heated to higher temperatures. The lower temperature of the sugar paste reduces the risk of burns or discomfort caused by heat.
  3. Gentle on the skin: The ingredients used in sugaring paste are often natural, such as sugar, lemon juice, and water. These ingredients tend to be gentler on the skin and less likely to cause irritation or redness.

However, it’s important to remember that pain tolerance can vary from person to person. Some individuals may still experience some level of discomfort during sugaring waxing, especially if it’s their first time or if they have sensitive skin.

To minimize discomfort during sugaring waxing, you can try the following techniques:

  • Take ibuprofen or another pain medication in advance - some estheticians and salons even sell additional pain medications or gels.
  • Choosing an experienced esthetician who is skilled in sugaring techniques.
  • Communicating with your esthetician about any concerns or sensitivities you may have.
  • Practicing deep breathing or relaxation techniques during the process to help manage discomfort.

Sugaring Aftercare

You have no need to worry about ingrown hairs if you take proper care of your skin. What is the best way to do this? Avoid hot water and heat for the first 24 to 48 hours after sugaring. Heat and hot water can irritate the freshly waxed skin and potentially lead to inflammation or ingrown hairs. Cleanse and moisturize your skin every day between sessions. Apply a soothing, fragrance-free moisturizer to hydrate and nourish the skin. Look for moisturizers that are specifically formulated for post-waxing care or those that contain gentle and hydrating ingredients like aloe vera or chamomile.

Avoid touching or scratching: Refrain from touching, scratching, or picking at the waxed area, as this can introduce bacteria and lead to potential infections or skin irritation.
Wear loose-fitting clothing made from breathable fabrics to prevent friction and irritation on the waxed skin. Tight clothing can rub against the area and potentially cause discomfort or ingrown hairs.

Set a recurring schedule for your visits with an esthetician. The recommended time between sessions is from 4 to 6 weeks, depending on personal physiology or how fast your hair grows. In the meantime, resist shaving or tweezing. Allow the hair to grow out until your next scheduled waxing appointment. Shaving or tweezing can interfere with the waxing cycle and make future waxing less effective.

Over time, hair in general may stop growing making your visits to the salon less frequent!
